Emperor Charles VI commissioned the architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach to build the winter riding hall in Vienna's Hofburg Palace. Construction of the magnificent Spanish Riding School went on between 1729 and 1735.
Opposite the entrance to the beautiful baroque hall, the monarch's portrait greets the riders of the Spanish Riding School when they train and present the Lipizzan stallions to an international audience during public performances.
