Am 25. Mai 1869 wurde das Haus mit Mozarts "Don Juan" in Anwesenheit von Kaiser Franz Joseph und Kaiserin Elisabeth feierlich eröffnet. Durch einen Bobemtreffer wurde das Haus am 12. März 1945 weitgehend verwüstet. Mit neuem Zuschauerraum und modernisierter Technik wurde die Wiener Staatsoper glanzvoll mit Beethovens "Fidelio" unter Karl Böhm am 5. November 1955 wiedereröffnet. Heute gilt sie als eines der wichtigsten Opernhäuser der Welt, vor allem als das Haus mit dem größten Repertoire. Direktor ist seit 1. September 2010 Dominique Meyer.
