How spontaneously did Van Gogh really work? What secret does an X-ray photograph of a Renoir disclose? How does one recognize an Impressionist painting? And what did the Impressionists paint with? Answers to these and further exciting questions will be supplied by the Albertina’s autumn show.Comprising some 130 paintings by forty-five artists, including Caillebotte, Cézanne, Courbet, Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Signac, Sisley, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Van Gogh, this exhibition is an unusual and spectacular foray into the world of French Impressionism, from its roots in plein-air painting to the optical colour experiments of Pointillism and Post-Impressionism.
The core of the show consists of seventy-five masterpieces from the collection of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne. The exhibition is complemented by principal works from the Albertina’s holdings and loans from private owners and international museums and galleries.
Upon purchasing a ticket and/or visiting the exhibition, you agree to the General Terms and Conditions “Museumsbetrieb der Albertina.”
